What Is Elaneer Payasam? A Guide to South India's Tender Coconut Dessert
If you've grown up in South India, the words elaneer payasam probably bring back a very specific memory: a wedding hall, a steel tumbler, and that first cold, coconut-sweet sip on a hot day. If you haven't grown up with it, here's everything you need to know about the dessert we've built Paanam around.
What Exactly Is Elaneer Payasam?
Elaneer is the Tamil word for tender coconut — the young, green coconut prized for its soft flesh and sweet water, as opposed to the mature brown coconut used for oil and dried copra. Payasam is the South Indian word for a milk-based sweet pudding, similar in spirit to kheer in North India.
Put together, elaneer payasam is a chilled, creamy dessert built around tender coconut water, tender coconut flesh, coconut milk, and cardamom. Unlike heavier rice- or lentil-based payasams that are served warm, elaneer payasam is always served cold, which makes it a favourite at summer weddings, temple festivals, and family celebrations across Tamil Nadu.
Why It's Hard to Find Outside India
Fresh tender coconut doesn't travel well or keep long once cracked open, so an authentic elaneer payasam has traditionally meant either living in South India or having access to fresh young coconuts — not exactly common in a German supermarket. That's the gap we built Paanam's Tender Coconut Kheer Mix to close.
How Paanam Recreates It
Our mix is built from coconut milk powder, coconut water powder, and freeze-dried young coconut flesh, with cardamom for the traditional aromatic finish. Freeze-drying keeps the coconut's flavour intact without needing preservatives, so you get close to the fresh version, shelf-stable, in a 100g or 500g pack. Prepare it with dairy or plant-based milk, depending on your preference.
